Why Join Wakefield Triathlon Club?

I am thinking of joining a Triathlon Club, but I am not good enough.

Wakefield Triathlon Club takes pride in the fact that we always encourage athletes of ALL abilities to attend our sessions, enter our events and become a member of our club. If you train with us you will NEVER be left behind, you will be encouraged to take part at your pace and you will be able to build skills in all three disciplines (4 if you include transitions!).

Yeah, but seriously I am really slow and will hold everyone up!

We can assure you that you will not hold anyone up. The group will train at their own pace, and will then drop back for the less able. Remember that before we were Triathletes we weren’t!

I am looking at a number of clubs- Why would I join Wakefield?

Wakefield was set up by Triathletes with a common aim; to encourage participation for all abilities. Want to do your first triathlon? We can help. Want to do an Ironman? We can help. We are a friendly club with a very active membership. Membership may not be the highest, but participation in events is high. We have a Winter Race series and a Summer Race series which keep the whole club active and allow all athletes to meet up and to also test yourself at different stages of the season.

Don’t do clubs. I just want to race.

That’s ok. We have a number of members that really only ever turn up at races, but with your membership you get full access to coaching sessions for free (where applicable) and you also get use of Pugney’s Water Park for most of the season to practice your open water swims (payment due directly to venue), and you get to run or cycle afterwards. The day membership is £5.00 but we have 2 sessions a week- so do 6 and your membership is in reality free!! Pugneys?

Open Water Swimming? What’s that?

Pugneys is a Water Park in Wakefield off Thornes Road. This venue allows us to hold Open Water swim sessions in a controlled and safe environment. A number of sessions are coached which you can join in. Open Water Swimming is the standard swimming used for most events over sprint distance. You will normally find that any Triathlon swim over 400mts is usually in a lake, the sea or similar water course. I don’t want to race.

I just want to keep fit/ train/ socialize.

That’s ok too. There are a number of us that don’t race, either due to family commitments, work or other reasons. We have training sessions most of the year, but in Summer these increase in number. Want to ride? Tick. Want to run? Tick. Want to swim? Tick. Or maybe you just want to speak to like-minded people and have a laugh. Wakefield is a friendly club and you will get to chance to socialize and meet people, particularly at the coffee / breakfast session after the open water swims!

If only I didn’t have kids!!.

We are a family orientated club. The Junior Club is one of the best in the Country so your kids can join in. We have a number of races and social events where the age groups get together. And our coach (me) is usually found running around Pugneys with a pram whilst his wife swims!

OK. I am interested.

What now? Why not contact our committee or Club Coach. Turn up at either a coached session or one of our “in-club” races. Introduce yourself to us. Ask questions. We will always be happy to chat (some more than others!). If you like us- join up. Great- I will get in touch soon As a Triathlete you will learn that you need a focus. You need to have race to aim for, or a time you wish to achieve. Don’t put it off- “Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift!” (extract from Kung Fu Panda!). Come on! You will love it!

OK - you've convinced me. Take me to the Membership Page, or go to the Home page
