Training with the Wakefield Triathlon Club
Throughout the year we aim to provide worthwhile fun training sessions to cater
for all abilities in swimming, cycling and running. The club particularly prides
itself on helping newcomers to triathlon achieve their goals. All club coaches
will endeavour to help any individual seeking guidance by offering free advice
on equipment, training and all things triathlon. Please feel free to contact our
Head Coach, Greg Parkin with any questions you may have.

Training sessions are seasonally structured working around the “race season”
which in the main runs between May and September and the “off season” from
November through to May again. When the race season ends around September we
actively encourage athletes to rest during October to allow full recovery from
the season's training and racing.
During November our winter training sessions get under way. These include pool
swimming on Sunday mornings at Scissett, a turbo session on Wednesday evenings
and a trail running session in winter held at Newmillerdam or Deffer Woods. A
WINTER group bike ride heads off after the swim sessions on Sunday mornings,
which is very popular and is structured to improve athlete performance.
All training sessions are periodised around the race season. This means that
early winter sessions focus on base fitness and technique. After Christmas and
into early spring we aim to build endurance, into late spring the intensity
increases in preparation for the competition season throughout the summer.
The start of open water swimming at Pugneys at the beginning of May is when the
winter training sessions finish (pool swimming, spinning and track sessions).
The Sunday morning group bike rides during the summer are often organised
informally via the forum. This is because many member may be away racing on the
weekends, making it difficult to offer a regualr ride. Sunday rides usually head
off after the open water swim at around 10.30 (allowing enough time after the
swim for a coffee, cake and natter in the cafe!).
