Coaching

Like all triathlon clubs, we offer coached training sessions for swimming, biking and running.

The times and locations for every session can be found in our calendar [here]

Below you will find further information about our sessions.

Payment

Other than Scissett swims (pay on the door), all sessions must be paid for in advance on our Session Payments page.

You’ll need your membership card at all sessions other than Scissett.

Note: Non-members are welcome to come along to try a session before joining

Swimming

We organise swimming session in 3 locations: Scissett, Featherstone and Wakefield (Sun Lane). All have a wide spread of abilities, from those trying to move from breaststroke to front-crawl all the way up to those doing 3km in the hour, but don't worry, we swim in like-ability lanes.

Equipment needed: a swimsuit; goggles, a drink and a towel.

The content of each session is different but the format is fairly consistent (unless we have a silly Christmas session).

Drills” – exercises that focus on a specific aspect of technique

Work” – the largest segment of the session, where you work on stamina and speed and apply the technique learned, in sets that can differ in distance and pace.

Cool down/Contrast” – a short gentle wind-down with a variety of formats (not always too serious).

For each session, make sure you get there 10 mins before the start to allow time for registration. Currently, you will need to arrive "swim ready" at all sessions.

Most of our sessions tend to be busier during the winter, particularly Jan - April when the coaching aims to progressively improve technique and stamina towards the race season.

Scissett - KAL - Scissett Baths & Fitness Centre

The Monday sessions have a greater focus on technique and coaching for beginners, whilst still supporting more experienced swimmers to develop both technique and endurance.

In the summer, Sunday sessions tend to be quieter due to Open Water Swimming.

Membership cards are not required at these sessions as they are public sessions organised by KAL.

Featherstone - Featherstone Swimming Pool

Cost: £4 in winter ; £2 in summer

The sessions are usually quiet during the summer when Open Water Swimming is on and not always coached over that period (because coaches tend to have races too).

Note that membership cards are required.
(Non-members are welcome to come along to try the session before joining. However, please make yourself known to the coaches on arrival.)

Wakefield - Sun Lane Leisure
Cost: £5

The sessions are usually quiet during the summer when Open Water Swimming is on.

Membership cards are required.

Biking

Bishop Konstant Cycle Track - 4 Agbrigg Grove, Wakefield WF2 6AD (note - do not go to the address found on the internet )

On top of group rides (see here), we offer traffic-free coached cycle sessions at Bishop Konstant Cycle Track (BKCAT)

Cost: £5

This is a closed, tarmacked 1km circuit. The sessions offer traffic-free coached cycle sessions. They involve a mixture of technique, speed and endurance training.  And, like all our sessions, it caters for everyone from beginners to super-riders

Equipment: a bike in good working condition (please check before each session) and a helmet (gloves are recommended).

Time trial bikes are not allowed.  And, if you have clip-on tri bars you must not use them.

Membership cards are required.

Running

Thornes Park Track - Horbury Rd, Wakefield WF2 8TY

What: Structured coached run session focusing on technique and base training through the winter building in intensity towards the race season to increase speed.
All abilities welcome at any stage of the season, where numbers are great or abilities dictate, the session will be split into smaller groups.

Note that membership cards are required.
(Non-members are welcome to come along to try the session before joining. However, please make yourself known to the coaches on arrival.)
